What is Human Centric Lighting?
Human-Centric Lighting (HCL), also known as Circadian Lighting, dynamically mimics natural daylight to help people intelligently adjust the brightness and color temperature of artificial light, aligning it with the body’s natural rhythms. This lighting approach goes beyond just brightness and color; it also takes into account the impact of light on mood and health. For example, morning light is typically cooler to help wake people up, while evening light is warmer to promote relaxation and rest.
Many modern office spaces, schools, hospitals, and industrial buildings lack adequate natural light. This is where Human-Centric Lighting (HCL) comes in. By adjusting light intensity and color temperature, HCL helps synchronize our environment with natural light, improving work efficiency and quality of life.
How Light Syncs with Our Body?
Human-centric lighting adjusts color and brightness to affect our circadian rhythm.
The circadian rhythm is like the body's "internal clock," regulating our sleep-wake cycle, which typically repeats every 24 hours. It is influenced by external cues, particularly light, helping the body know when to wake up, stay alert, eat, and rest, thus staying in sync with the natural day-night cycle. When this biological rhythm is disrupted, such as by exposure to bright artificial light at night, it can lead to difficulty falling asleep, which may trigger sleep disorders, depression, poor eating habits, and increase the risk of various health problems.
However, by strategically using light to support and regulate the circadian rhythm, we can significantly improve both mental and physical health, enhancing overall well-being.
